Suboya - Suboya

Japanese: スボヤ - すぼや

A protochordate of the family Polymorphidae of the class Urichothorax. It is so named because its body fluids have a sour taste. It is found from Hokkaido to northeastern Honshu. It is cylindrical, about 5 cm long and 3 cm in diameter, and is attached to other objects at a slight angle. The outer skin of the body is greenish-brown, thick, cartilaginous, and translucent. The apex of the body is raised in a ridge-like shape, and on the inside there are water inlet and outlet holes surrounded by six plates. Most of them have other attached organisms on their surface. The inner layer of the outer skin is edible. It is closely related to C. macleayanus and several other species, all of which are found in northern regions.

尾索綱ドロボヤ科の原索動物。体液に酸味があるところからこの名がある。北海道から本州北東部に分布する。体長5cm，径3cmほどの円柱状で，やや傾いて他物に付着している。体の外皮は緑褐色で厚く，軟骨状を呈し，半透明。体の頂端の周辺はうね状に盛り上がっていて，その内方には6枚の板に囲まれている入水孔と出水孔が見られる。大部分のものは表面に他の付着生物がついている。外皮の内層を食用にする。近縁種にキタカメノコボヤC.macleayanusほか数種があるが，いずれも北方域に産する。
