The oldest records of Armenia appear in the Hittite chronicles (14th century BC), and the oldest inscription found in Armenia is an Assyrian victory inscription against the Nairi at Manazkert, north of Lake Van (12th century BC). Urartu (Ararat in the Old Testament), related to the Nairi, became the first unified Armenian state, which lasted until its destruction by the Medes in 590 BC.
