While sailing the Atlantic Ocean along the continent, Pinzón accidentally encountered a freshwater stream. Realizing that there was a river, he named it Mar Dulce (Sweet Sea) and traveled upstream for about 80 km. Later, Spanish-born Francisco de Orellana (1511-46) set out from Quito, Ecuador, crossed the snowy Andes, and traveled down the Coca River, a tributary of the Napo River.
