Nagachika Kanamori

Nagachika Kanamori

A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Commonly known as Gorohachi, he was Hyobu Taifu. Born as the son of Ohata Sadachika, a branch of the Toki clan, he later moved to Kanamori Village in Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture) and changed his surname. He served Oda Nobunaga early on and distinguished himself in the Battle of Nagashino. Later, he served Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and in 1585 (Tensho 13), he destroyed the Miki clan of Hida, obtained over 38,000 koku of Hida land, and established a castle town in Takayama. In the Battle of Sekigahara, he followed Tokugawa Ieyasu together with his adopted son Arisige, and was granted an additional 23,000 koku in Kami-Ari-chi (Mino City) and other areas. He handed over Takayama Castle to Arisige, and built Kokura Castle in Kami-Ari-chi and lived there. He went by the name Sogen and was known for his expertise in the tea ceremony. He died on August 12, 1600 in Fushimi, and was buried at Kinryu-in Temple in Daitoku-ji Temple. Sogen-ji Temple in Takayama City is the family temple that he built.

安土(あづち)桃山時代の武将。通称五郎八、兵部大輔(ひょうぶたいふ)。土岐(とき)氏の支族大畑定近の子に生まれ、のち近江(おうみ)国(滋賀県)金森村に移り、氏を改めた。早く織田信長に仕えて長篠(ながしの)の戦いに功があった。のち豊臣(とよとみ)秀吉に仕え、1585年(天正13)飛騨(ひだ)の三木(みつき)氏を滅ぼし飛騨3万8000余石を得て、高山に城下町を整えた。関ヶ原の戦いには養子可重(ありしげ)とともに徳川家康に従い、上有知(こうずち)(美濃(みの)市)ほか2万3000石を加増され、高山城を可重に譲り、自らは上有知に小倉城を築いて住んだ。素玄(そげん)と号し茶の湯に通じて知られる。慶長(けいちょう)13年8月12日伏見(ふしみ)で没し、大徳寺内金竜院に葬られた。高山市の素玄寺は可重が建てた菩提(ぼだい)寺。
