Japanese: モデム（英語表記）modem

A device used to send and receive data from one computer to another using a communication line such as a telephone. An abbreviation for modulator demodulator. It has the function of converting between digital signals for computers and analog signals for telephone lines. Standardization is based on the V series recommendations of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecommunication Standardization Sector. Downstream (from the line to the computer) communication is possible at a speed of 56 kilobits per second (kbps). Models that comply with the V.90 standard are mainstream, but communication between computers is often now via digital lines or LANs. Modems for connecting to digital public lines such as ISDN are often called terminal adapters.

電話などの通信回線を使ってコンピュータからコンピュータにデータを送受信するときに使われる装置。変調復調装置 modulator demodulatorの略称。コンピュータ用のデジタル信号と電話回線用のアナログ信号を相互に変換する機能がある。国際電気通信連合 ITUの電気通信標準化部門でのVシリーズ勧告に基づく規格による標準化がなされている。下り (回線からコンピュータへ) 56キロビット毎秒 kbpsの速度で通信できる V.90規格に合うモデルが主流だが，コンピュータ間の通信はデジタル回線やLAN経由に代わる場合も多くなった。ISDNなどデジタル公衆回線につなぐためのモデムはターミナルアダプタと呼ばれることが多い。
