The largest river on the island of New Guinea. It is 1,040 km long. It originates in the great mountain range that runs through the center of the island, and flows slowly, meandering through the great alluvial plain in the south of the island, before emptying into the Gulf of Papua. There is only a 20 m elevation difference between the river mouth and the 800 km upstream, and during the rainy season from December to March, the river often floods over a wide area. The vast delta at the river mouth is a low-lying swamp covered with mangroves, and the basin, covered with dense forest, is home to a variety of tropical wildlife. It has particularly close ties with Australia, and monotremes and marsupials can be seen there. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
