A device that uses laser light to measure the distance between the Moon and the Earth with high precision. The distance can be determined by shining a laser light from Earth at a laser reflector placed on the Moon's surface by the Apollo spacecraft, and measuring the time it takes for the reflected light to return. At the McDonald Observatory in the United States, regular observations are conducted using a 270 cm diameter reflecting telescope, achieving an accuracy of about 30 to 40 cm. This allows the orbital and rotational motion of the Moon, as well as the distance between the Moon and the Earth, to be determined with high precision, which is useful for determining variations in the Earth's rotation and polar motion.

レーザー光を用いて月と地球の距離を精度よく測定する装置。アポロ宇宙船が月面に置いてきたレーザー光反射器に地上からレーザー光をあて，反射光が戻ってくるまでの時間を測定することによって距離を知ることができる。アメリカのマクドナルド天文台では，口径270cmの反射望遠鏡を用いて定常的に観測が行われていて，30～40cmほどの精度が得られている。これにより月の公転や自転の運動，月と地球の距離が高い精度で得られ，地球の自転運動の変動や極運動の決定に役だてられる。
