Touko - Touko

A hunting and pastoral people that appeared in the eastern part of the Mongolian Plateau around the Spring and Autumn Period (770-453 BC). At first, along with the Yuezhi to the west, they were dominant over the Xiongnu, but were defeated by the Xiongnu's Maodun Chanyu and submitted to him. The Wuhuan, Xianbei, and Khitan are all said to be their descendants. There is a theory that Donghu is a transliteration of Tungus, but this seems to mean the people east of the Hu (Xiongnu). Shiratori Kuji's theory about their race is that they are a mixed race, mainly Mongolian and Tungusic, but this is not clear.

春秋時代（前770～前453）ごろからモンゴル高原東部に現れた狩猟牧畜民族。初めは、西方の月氏(げっし)とともに匈奴(きょうど)より優勢であったが、匈奴の冒頓単于(ぼくとつぜんう)に討たれてそれに服属した。烏桓(うがん)、鮮卑(せんぴ)、契丹(きったん)はいずれもその後裔(こうえい)であるといわれる。東胡とはツングースの音訳であるとする説もあるが、これは、胡（匈奴）の東の民族という意味であるらしい。その人種について、モンゴル系を主とし、ツングース系の混じった混血種族であるという白鳥庫吉(しらとりくらきち)の説があるが、明らかではない。
