...General term for artificially made fibers as opposed to natural fibers. Also called chemical fibers for short. Also called man-made fibers, this term is used in the narrow sense to refer to artificial fibers excluding synthetic fibers. Chemical fibers are classified into synthetic fibers, semi-synthetic fibers, regenerated fibers, and inorganic fibers. The table below shows the classification of chemical fibers.

The idea of making fibers artificially has been around for a long time, but it wasn't put into practice until the 19th century. Efforts began to make a high-quality, silk-like synthetic fiber (called artificial silk, or rayon for short) from cheap natural cellulose fibers such as cotton.
