… Rum was issued to the British Navy in the 18th century, and Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757) recommended drinking rum mixed with water every day. He was nicknamed "Old Grog" because he wore a coat made of a fabric called grog gram, and rum mixed with water came to be called grog (other strong alcoholic beverages, or those mixed with water or hot water, are also called grog). Also, Admiral Nelson's body was brought home in a barrel of rum, so the nickname "Nelson's blood" was born. …
