Karamono Dobou - Karamono Dobou

In the samurai society, it was characteristic that performers from various fields served as attendants to the Shogun family. For example, Sarugaku performer Onami, garden designers Zenami, Koshiro, and Matashiro (three generations), and Dohoshu performers Noami, Geiami, and Soami Well-known names include Chiami of Dai, Ko, and Cha, and Ritsuami of Tachibana. Of these, the Doho-shu were most active during the reign of Yoshimasa, following Yoshimochi and Yoshinori, and the Karamono Doho in particular were in charge of collecting Chinese goods for the Shogun family, and were responsible for appreciating them, storing them, mounting them, and decorating rooms with Chinese goods and paintings. This corresponds to the development of Shoin-zashiki (Shoin-zukuri) rooms during this period, and it is no exaggeration to say that the Kundai Kansocho-ki, which could be said to be a culmination of the rules for interior decor created by the Doho-shu through their own experience, became the basis of the aesthetics of Japanese life that followed.

…　さて武家社会では，将軍家を中心に，諸分野にわたる芸能者がこれに近侍奉仕したのが特徴で，猿楽の音阿弥や作庭の善阿弥･小四郎･又四郎3代，同朋衆では唐物奉行に当たった能阿弥･芸阿弥･相阿弥代，香，茶の千阿弥，立花（たてはな）の立阿弥などの名が知られる。このうち同朋衆は，義持，義教を経て義政の時代に最も活躍するが，とくに唐物同朋は将軍家による唐物収集を担当し，目利（めきき），保管，表装あるいは唐物唐絵をもってする座敷飾に当たった。これはこの時期における書院座敷(書院造)の発達に対応するもので，同朋衆が経験的につくり出した室礼の規式の集大成ともいうべき《君台観左右帳記（くんだいかんそうちようき）》は，その後における日本人の生活美学の母体となったといっても過言ではない。…
