A type of special synthetic rubber. Its abbreviation according to ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards is IIR. It is also called isobutylene-isoprene rubber. It is synthesized by cationic polymerization of isobutylene containing 1.5-5% isoprene in methyl chloride at -100°C with aluminum chloride catalyst. Since it contains carbon-carbon double bonds of isoprene units, it can be vulcanized with normal sulfur. It has excellent weather resistance, heat resistance, and electrical insulation, low gas permeability and rebound elasticity, and high shock absorption. Its disadvantages are its slow vulcanization speed and poor adhesion to metals. It is used for cables, waterproof sheets, radiator hoses, linings, and vibration shock absorbers. Its largest use is as an inner tube for automobile tires. Chlorinated butyl rubber, which has improved vulcanizability and adhesion, is used for the inner liners of tubeless tires. ASTM(アメリカ材料試験協会)の規格による略称はIIR。
