A celebration of longevity, also known as sanka. Age 40 according to the traditional Japanese age reckoning system is called shoro, and celebrations were held every 10 years thereafter. Nowadays, celebrations for 40 and 50 are no longer common, but celebrations for 61 (kanreki), 70 (koki), 77 (kiju), 80 (sanju), 88 (beiju), 90 (sotju), and 99 (hakuju). These sanka customs were introduced from mainland China, and it is detailed in books such as "Goukeshidai" that solemn ceremonies were held for the emperor's sanka.
