Butyllithium

Japanese: ブチルリチウム

An organometallic compound with the chemical formula C ₄ H ₉ Li. It is obtained by reacting bromobutane with metallic lithium in ether. It is a colorless liquid. Depending on the position of the carbon to which the lithium is bonded, four isomers are known: primary ( n- and iso), secondary, and tertiary, in which order the basicity increases. It is more basic than the corresponding Grignard reagent, and is important as a reagent for abstraction reactions of acidic hydrogen in organic compounds. [Tomoda Shuji]
