Certificate - Shoban

Japanese: 証判 - しょうばん

A term used in paleography. It refers to the words and signatures written in the margins of documents related to land property, such as petitions such as ge and senjo, and documents related to lost property such as ge, senjo, and gunchujo, or documents related to land property such as sales certificates, transfer letters, and donation letters that originated from ge, and indicates approval or confirmation of the document. It is written on the sleeve, back, or sometimes on the back of the submitted document, and is also called gedai or yohan. Under the Ritsuryo system, the transfer of land ownership required the permission of the government, so a ge was submitted to the Kyoto shokuji, kokushi, or gunji for approval when buying, selling, transferring, or donating land.

古文書学上の用語。解（げ），申状などの上申文書，およびその系譜をひく紛失状，着到状，軍忠状，または解に起源を有する売券，譲状，施入状(寄進状)などの土地財産に関する証文類の余白に記された，その文書に対する承認，確認などの意をあらわす文言と署判のこと。提出された文書の袖，奥，たまには裏に記し，外題（げだい）とも与判ともいう。律令制下では土地所有権の移動は政府の許可を必要としたから，その売買，譲渡，施入(寄進)にあたっては，京職，国司，郡司の承認を求める解を提出する。
