In order to join a Buddhist religious organization, one must receive the precepts that must be observed. There are various theories about the procedure, but those who wish to join must first choose a priest to be their leader and then receive the full precepts. In the ceremony for the full precepts, ten monks gather at the ordination platform, where the candidate salutes each of them, receives a robe and a bowl, and is instructed on how to use them. The person who will become a priest is then reconfirmed, and in a place unknown to the candidate, a teacher is selected, centered around the konmasi, who is the central figure in the ritual etiquette. The teacher visits the candidate and asks whether there are any obstacles (shanan) to religious life based on more than twenty points, such as whether he or she is male and whether he or she has parental permission, and reports the results. If there are no obstacles, the candidate returns to the original place and expresses his or her desire to be given the full precepts. The karma master tells the monks present that the applicant wishes to receive the precepts, and again formally asks the monks whether they have any obstacles, then asks the monks present three times whether the applicant and the monk are eligible (karma), and concludes by stating that the full precepts will be given if there are no objections. The karma master's proposal to receive the precepts (byakushikonma) and his three inquiries about eligibility (karma) are called byakushikonma (byakushikonma) (the above roughly follows the Ten Recitation Vinaya). The above is the procedure for becoming a monk (bhikkhu, bhikkuni), but in China and Japan, the ceremony in which the precepts are given to believers as a group is called a jukaie (precept giving ceremony).
