… The earliest examples of colonial popular music are found in Sri Lanka and Indonesia. After Portuguese troops invaded South Asia in the early 16th century, contact between their music and local music gave rise to the hybrid music of kaffrinna and baira in Sri Lanka and klong chong in Indonesia, at least as far as we know today, both of which continue to be enjoyed by the masses to this day. In the case of Sri Lanka, it has been reported that kaffrinna and baira also contained elements of African music, since the Portuguese soldiers included Africans conscripted from Mozambique, but this is unclear in the case of Indonesia's klong chong. …
