A legendary golden country that the 16th century Spanish conquistadors believed to exist in the New World and fervently searched for. The legend is said to have originated from a ritual in which the Chibcha chief of Bogotá made an annual offering to the spirits of Lake Guatavita and bathed in gold dust, which the Spanish distorted and exaggerated. Numerous expeditions were organized in search of El Dorado, but the most famous were those from the north (Santa Marta) under Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada (1500?-79), those from Quito under Sebastián de Benalcázar (1480-1551), and those from Venezuela led by the German Nicolaus Federmann (1501-42).
