...In 1867 (Keio 3), the government was returned to the Emperor, and in 1868 (Meiji 1), the Nagaoka and Murakami clans joined the Oshu-Uetsu League during the Boshin War but were defeated (Hokuetsu War), and Echigo came under the control of the new government. In 1871, Niigata Prefecture and Kashiwazaki Prefecture were established. In 1873, Kashiwazaki Prefecture was merged with Aikawa Prefecture, and in 1886, Higashikanbara County, Fukushima Prefecture was merged with Niigata Prefecture, which remains the same to this day.
