Ramón Menéndez Pidal

Spanish literary historian and linguist. He studied under Menéndez y Pelayo at the University of Madrid, and in 1899 was appointed professor of Romance Languages at the university. He also became a member of the Royal Academy in 1902, and later served as its president for many years. While his teacher Menéndez y Pelayo excelled in a broad synthesis of Spanish culture, he applied a more scholarly and rigorous analytical method, and made great achievements in the study of medieval culture across language, literature, and history. In particular, his work The Songs of My Cid: Text, Grammar, Vocabulary (1908-12) was highly acclaimed worldwide and became the foundation for subsequent El Cid research.

スペインの文学史家，言語学者。マドリード大学でメネンデス･イ･ペラヨに師事し，1899年マドリード大学のロマンス言語学の教授に就任。また1902年に王立アカデミーの会員になり，のちに長くその会長の座にあった。師メネンデス･イ･ペラヨがスペイン文化の広範な総合に秀でたのに対し，彼はより学問的で厳密な分析的方法を適用し，言語，文学，歴史にまたがる中世文化の研究に大きな成果をあげたが，とりわけ《わがシッドの歌――原文，文法，語彙》(1908‐12)は世界的に高い評価を受け，その後のエル･シッド研究の基盤となった。
