1869‐1968 Spanish literary historian and linguist. He studied under Menéndez y Pelayo at the University of Madrid, and in 1899 was appointed professor of Romance Languages at the university. He also became a member of the Royal Academy in 1902, and later served as its president for many years. While his teacher Menéndez y Pelayo excelled in a broad synthesis of Spanish culture, he applied a more scholarly and rigorous analytical method, and made great achievements in the study of medieval culture across language, literature, and history. In particular, his work The Songs of My Cid: Text, Grammar, Vocabulary (1908-12) was highly acclaimed worldwide and became the foundation for subsequent El Cid research.
