Sobaek Mountains

Japanese:
Sobaek Mountains

Branching off from the Taebaek Mountains in the eastern part of Korea (Republic of Korea), the Sobaek Mountains extend southwestward and form the watershed between the three regions of Jungbu, Yeongnam, and Honam. They include Jirisan (1,915m), Bukmangyusan (1,594m), Gukmangbong (1,442m), and Songnisan (1,057m), forming a mountain range over 1,000m in height across a wide area of southern Korea. The geology of the Sobaek Mountains is mainly composed of granite gneiss, and eroded basins are developed at the foot of the mountains. These basins, such as Hamyang, Sancheong, Hadong, and Geochang in South Gyeongsang Province, Namwon in North Jeolla Province, and Gurye in South Jeolla Province, are the centers of local culture. Steep passes are an obstacle to transportation between these cities and towns. The mountain passes include Joryeong (642 meters) between Yeongju and Danyang, Chupungryeong (548 meters) between Gimcheon and Yeongdong, and Yushippyeong (604 meters) between Hamyang and Jinan.
