Offering - Bujo

Japanese: 奉請 - ぶじょう

The title and classification of Shomyokyoku (phonological chanting). This is used at the beginning of a memorial service to request the arrival of various deities such as Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. It usually consists of several verses such as "We offer this and that Buddha" and depending on the number of verses, it is called "Three Offerings," "Four Offerings," "Sixth Offering," etc. Some verses are common to several sects, while others are unique to a single sect, and the melody differs depending on the sect. 声明曲（しようみようきよく）の曲名および分類名。法要の導入部で仏菩薩等の諸尊の来臨を請うもの。〈奉請何々如来〉などの詞章数節を連ねるのが普通で，その節の数により，《三奉請》《四奉請》《奉請六位》などと称する。詞章は，数宗派に共通するものと一宗派独特のものとあり，曲節は宗派によって異なる。これを唱えながら，散華（さんげ），礼拝等の所作をすることが多い。【横道万里雄】
