Feofan Grek

A Greek icon painter active in Russia from 1330 to 1410. In the 1370s, he worked on murals and icons, mainly in Novgorod, and was known in Russian as Theophanes the Greek (meaning Theophanes the Greek). He painted murals in the Preobrazhenie Cathedral, such as "The Holy Trinity of the Old Testament" and "Saint Macarius," in a strict spiritualistic style using limited colors and intense brushwork. In addition to the "Deesis" (1405) in the iconostasis of the Blagoveshchensky Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin, which is later believed to be an original, there are several other known icons that are thought to be from his workshop or a successor to his.

ロシアで活躍したギリシア出身のイコン画家。1370年代にはノブゴロドを中心に壁画やイコンの制作にたずさわり，ロシア語でフェオファン･グレク(ギリシア人テオファネスの意)と呼ばれた。プレオブラジェニエ聖堂内に〈旧約の至聖三者〉〈聖マカリイ〉など，限られた色彩と激しい筆使いによる厳しい精神主義的作風の壁画を残している。イコンでは，後年モスクワのクレムリン内ブラゴベシチェンスキー大聖堂イコノスタシスの〈デイシス〉(1405)が真筆とされるほか，彼の工房もしくはその流れをくむと見られる作品がいくつか知られている。
