An annual or biennial herb of the Brassicaceae family. Taxonomically, it is considered a variety of rape, but it is cultivated mainly for food. It is said to have originated in Komatsugawa, Edogawa Ward, Tokyo, from which it was named. It is highly cold-resistant, has soft leaves with little fiber, and is sown in October and used from December to New Year's when there is a shortage of vegetable crops.
