This pilgrimage church stands on the hill of Montmartre in Paris. Its construction was planned as a national event to pray for recovery from the social turmoil that followed the defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune, and the Romanesque-Byzantine style plan (1874) by Paul Abadie (1812-84) was adopted. Its model was the Cathedral of Saint-Front in Périgueux in the south of France, whose restoration Abadie himself helped to carry out. It was completed in 1910, just before World War I. During its construction, it was criticized as a medieval imitation that marred the Parisian landscape, but today it has become an indispensable landmark in the city.
