Angkor Wat (English spelling)

Japanese: アンコール･ワット（英語表記）Angkor Vat

A representative Khmer structure (illustration) built in the capital of the Angkor dynasty (9th to 15th centuries) that flourished in Cambodia. It is located about 5 km north of Siem Reap city. It is a huge temple built by piling up sandstone blocks, and its beautiful silhouette is praised as a masterpiece of Khmer architecture. It is a Hindu (Vaishnavite) mausoleum temple built by Suryavarman II in the first half of the 12th century. In other words, this temple was built as a place to hold the funeral of Suryavarman II after his death, and the king devoted himself to the god Vishnu in the hope of happiness in the afterlife.

カンボジアに栄えたアンコール朝(9～15世紀)の首都に建てられた，クメール族による代表的な建造物（イラスト）。シエムリアップ市の北約5kmにある。砂岩のブロックを積み上げて建てられた巨大な聖殿で，その全景のシルエットが美しいため，クメール建築の最高傑作としてたたえられている。12世紀前半にスールヤバルマン2世によって造営されたヒンドゥー教(ビシュヌ派)の霊廟寺院である。すなわちこの寺院はスールヤバルマン2世の死後，葬儀を行う所として建設され，王は死後の幸福を願って，ビシュヌ神に帰依している。
