This name has been used since the Middle Ages to refer to the area around the eastern foot of Kinjo Mountain in Enuma County, Kaga Province, now Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and in the early modern period it was the castle town of the Daishoji Domain. The name comes from the name of a temple that belonged to the Hakusan Shrine Kaga Baba. During the Nanboku-cho period, Daishoji Castle was built on Kinjo Mountain, and thereafter, repeated attacks and defenses were fought over the castle until the Kaga Ikko Ikki uprising was pacified. In 1583, Mizoguchi Hidekatsu was assigned to Daishoji as a vassal of Niwa Nagahide, and in 1639, Toshiharu, the third son of Maeda Toshitsune, the third lord of Kanazawa Domain, was granted 70,000 koku of land and founded the Daishoji Domain. Toshiharu built his domain residence on the eastern foot of Kinjo Mountain, and a castle town was formed to the east of that. The townspeople's town developed along the Hokuriku Kaido, which runs from southwest to northeast through the center of the castle town. Honmachi, the center of Honmachi, had many inns and was also called Hatagomachi. The townspeople's town was under the control of two town magistrates, and the town elders were selected by the domain from among the influential townspeople. Yoshidaya, who revived Kutani ware, was a leading townsperson in Fukudamachi. The town's specialty was silk weaving, and after the Meiji Restoration, many weaving factories were built using the remains of samurai residences, and the town developed along with the development of the sericulture and silk-reeling industries in the neighboring rural areas. However, the town was forced to change its business due to the development of the weaving industry during World War II, and the town continued to decline after the war. Currently, the town is finding a way forward in Kutani ware and the tourism industry. In 1958, five towns and four villages, including Daishojimachi, merged to form Kaga City.
