1752‐1832 American poet. Born in New York, he graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). He was captured by the British during the War of Independence, and is known as the "poet of the War of Independence" for the poem "A British Prison Ship" (1781), which was based on his experiences. After the war, he continued to write prolifically for the pro-Jefferson magazine, the National Gazette, but he is also highly regarded for his poetic talent, as shown in his romantic nature poems "An Indian Burial Ground" and "Wild Honeysuckle."
