It is a herbaceous plant of the genus I. herbstii of the Amaranthaceae family, with about 80 species distributed widely in tropical and subtropical regions, but only two species are used horticulturally. I. herbstii Hook.f. (English name beefsteak plant, chicken-gizzard) (illustration) is an evergreen perennial plant native to Brazil with broad, ovate leaves that grow in pairs. The tips of the leaves are shallowly incised, purple-red to dark green, and the veins are prominent and yellow. There is a variety, I. herbstii cv. Aureo-reticulata, with yellow-green leaves.
