Fujioka Shell Mound

Japanese: 藤岡貝塚 - ふじおかかいづか

An archaeological site from the early Jomon period located in Fujioka Sasayama, Fujioka Town, Shimotsuga County, Tochigi Prefecture. It is also called the Sasayama Shell Mound. It is located more than 70 km inland from the current coastline and has long been famous as the shell mound at the innermost part of the Kanto region. It is located on a plateau (approximately 22 m above sea level) on the west bank of the Akamanuma flood control reservoir, at the southern tip of Tochigi Prefecture, and consists of three shell mounds in the north, central, and southern parts. All of the shell mounds are mainly light-colored shell mounds, mainly consisting of freshwater shellfish such as Yamato corbicula, and excavations have been conducted three times so far, in 1941, 1951, and 1979.

栃木県下都賀郡藤岡町藤岡篠山にある縄文時代前期の遺跡。篠山貝塚ともよばれる。現在の海岸線から70km以上も内陸にあり，古くから関東最奥の貝塚として有名である。栃木県の南端，赤麻沼遊水池西岸の台地上(標高約22m)にあり，北部，中部，南部の3地点の貝塚からなる。貝塚はいずれもヤマトシジミなど淡水産の貝類が主体を占める主淡貝塚で，これまで，1941年，51年，79年の3回にわたって発掘調査が行われている。
