Year of death: February 3, 1910 (Meiji 43) Year of birth: 15 August 1870 (1870.8.19) A Meiji period scholar of Japanese literature. His pen names were Toho, Rikatei, and Biwaen. He was born in Kanazawa. His father was a student and his mother was a soto. He graduated from the Japanese literature department of the Imperial University. After serving as a professor at Sanko, he became an assistant professor at Tokyo Imperial University in 1900. He also had a deep knowledge of painting, and in 1907 he was appointed as a judge for the Bunten exhibition. His research attitude, expressed in the first chapter of the general discussion of "Complete History of Japanese Literature/Heian Period Edition," written in 1903, is as follows: "If I were to leave the Meiji period with an open mind and become a person of the Heian period myself and look at that period, I would surely be close to getting the point across." His writings include "History of Japanese Customs and Manners" (1895, co-authored with Hiraide Kenjiro) and "History of Modern Painting" (1903).
