A playful essay

Japanese: 戯文 - ぎぶん

Southern Chinese drama. Also known as Nanqu. Northern zaju flourished during the Yuan dynasty (Yuanqu), but xiwen flourished most during the Ming dynasty (Mingqu). It originated in the Southern Song dynasty, and was revived in the early Ming with Gaoming's Pipa Ji. While Yuanqu strictly adheres to the rule of four acts per piece, there is no limit to the number of acts, and many are long. Works such as Jingcai Ji, Return of the Soul, and Nankaku Ji are considered masterpieces, all with 44 to 45 acts, and there are also works such as Changsheng Palace in the Qing dynasty.

中国の南方系戯曲。南曲とも。北方系の雑劇は元代に盛んになった（元曲）が，戯文は明代に最も栄えた（明曲）。起源は南宋にあり，明初，高明の《琵琶記》が出て復興。元曲が各４幕の規則を固守するのに対し，幕数に制限がなく長編が多い。《荊釵(けいさ)記》《還魂記》《南柯(なんか)記》等が名作とされ，いずれも44〜45幕，清代にも《長生殿》等がある。
