Anat (English spelling)
The great goddess of ancient Phoenicia. Her character as a goddess of war was particularly prominent, and her worship was also adopted in Egypt. In the mythology recorded in documents excavated from the ruins of the ancient city of Ugarit, Anat is depicted as the sister of a god called Ariyan-Baal, and as a cruel goddess who killed countless people for him, staining her hands with blood, and also fought against the god Mot, who had defeated Baal, killed him, chopped up his corpse, sifted it in a winnowing basket, roasted it in a fire, crushed it in a mortar, and scattered it on the fields.
