An old town in Shimotsuga District, southern Tochigi Prefecture. It occupies the lowlands along the Watarase River, and the low marshes in the southern half are a flood control basin. The central settlement developed as a river port and market town during the Edo period, and is served by the Tobu Nikko Line and the Tohoku Expressway. Rice farming and greenhouse horticulture are practiced here. In March 2010, it merged with Tochigi City, Ohira Town in Shimotsuga District, and Tsuga Town. 60.45 km2 . 栃木県南部,下都賀(しもつが)郡の旧町。渡良瀬(わたらせ)川の沿岸低地を占め,南半部の低湿地は遊水池。中心集落は江戸時代に河港,市場町として発達,東武日光線,東北自動車道が通じる。米作,施設園芸などが行われる。2010年3月栃木市,下都賀郡大平町,都賀町と合併。60.45km2。1万8056人(2005)。
