Latent structure analysis

It is a theory proposed by P.F. Lazarsfeld for analyzing the relationships between questionnaire items when measuring attitudes. It operationally defines attitude as a set of symptoms of response consistency. Response consistency means that the manifest items used to ascertain attitudes are mutually correlated; in fact, the interrelationships between items determine attitudes. Attitude variables are understood from this consistency, so the inference is made that items are related to each other due to latent variables. If the latent variables are always held constant, the items are treated as independent. This is the basis of latent structure analysis.

態度測定に際して質問項目間の関係を分析するための理論の一つで，P.F.ラザースフェルドによって提唱された。これは，態度を反応の一貫性の徴候群として操作的に定義する。反応の一貫性ということは，態度を知るのに用いられる顕在的項目が相互に相関し合っていることを意味し，事実，項目間の相互関係性が態度を規定するのである。態度変数は，こうした一貫性から把握するため，項目は潜在的変数のゆえに相互に関係するという推論を立てる。潜在的変数が常に常数として保たれるならば項目は独立として扱う。これが潜在構造分析の基本である。
