Cod liver oil

A fatty oil extracted from the fresh liver and pyloric caeca of Pacific cod or Alaska pollock, containing 2,000-5,000 IU (international units) of vitamin A per gram, and about one-tenth of that amount as vitamin _D3 . It is a yellow to orange oily liquid with a distinctive, slightly fishy smell. It was once used to prevent and treat diseases such as rickets due to the effects of this vitamin. Today, in addition to being widely used for vitamin A and D deficiencies, it is also applied externally to wounds or eroded areas to treat keratotic skin diseases thought to be related to vitamin A deficiency or metabolic disorders. For internal use, liver oil capsules are available in easy-to-swallow soft capsule form.

マダラまたはスケトウダラの新鮮な肝臓および幽門垂から得た脂肪油で、1グラム中にビタミンAを2000～5000IU（国際単位）含み、その約10分の1のビタミンD₃を含む。黄色ないし橙(だいだい)色の油液で、わずかに魚臭を帯びた特異なにおいがある。かつてくる病などの予防、治療に用いられたのは、このビタミンによる効果であった。現在ではビタミンAとDの欠乏症に広く用いられるほか、ビタミンA欠乏または代謝障害が関与するとみられる角化性皮膚疾患の治療のため、創傷またはびらん面に外用される。内服には飲みやすい軟カプセルの肝油球がある。
