A fatty oil extracted from the fresh liver and pyloric caeca of Pacific cod or Alaska pollock, containing 2,000-5,000 IU (international units) of vitamin A per gram, and about one-tenth of that amount as vitamin D3 . It is a yellow to orange oily liquid with a distinctive, slightly fishy smell. It was once used to prevent and treat diseases such as rickets due to the effects of this vitamin. Today, in addition to being widely used for vitamin A and D deficiencies, it is also applied externally to wounds or eroded areas to treat keratotic skin diseases thought to be related to vitamin A deficiency or metabolic disorders. For internal use, liver oil capsules are available in easy-to-swallow soft capsule form.
