Novelist. Born in Fukuoka Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of French Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. In the fall of 1942 (Showa 17), he formed a new literary group called "Matinee Poétique" with friends he had known since Kaisei Junior High School in Tokyo, including Shinichiro Nakamura, Shuichi Kato, and Keisaku Kubota. During that time, he met Tatsuo Hori. His first full-length novel, "Fudo," which he had been working on since before the war, was completed in 1951 (Showa 26), after Japan's defeat. This work, which combines traditional French psychological novels with the stream-of-consciousness method, was highly praised, and he established his position in the literary world by publishing his next full-length novel, "Kusa no Hana" (Flowers of Grass) (1954). After the war, he spent a long time recuperating, but his vigorous creative ability did not wane, and his representative works include "River of Forgetfulness" (1964), "Mirage City" (1968), and "Shi no Shima" (Island of Death), which won the Japan Literature Grand Prize. His novelistic methods were conscious and experimental, rare in contemporary literature, and he was eager to create a romantic novel. He also wrote the critical biography "Gauguin's World," which won the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award, and he also attempted to write detective novels under the name Reitarou Kata.
