A state on the Gulf Coast of the United States. Abbreviated as Texas or TX. The western part is a gentle plateau, while the eastern and southern parts are lowlands. The Rio Grande River runs along the Mexican border. The climate is generally dry, with some deserts. Irrigation is well developed, and the state produces cotton, pecans, and corn. Livestock include cattle, sheep, and pigs. Texas is one of the world's leading oil-producing areas, and is the second largest producer of natural gas in the United States (Texas oil fields). Texas also produces helium, coal, rock salt, and gypsum. Texas has long been known as a state of large ranches and cowboys, but today, as symbolized by the NASA space station in Houston, industry is developing rapidly, with oil refining, petrochemicals, rubber, food processing, and aerospace manufacturing. Texas is one of the core states of the United States economically. The Spanish invaded this area, which was inhabited by Indian tribes, at the end of the 17th century. It became a Mexican territory in 1821, but since the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the number of American settlers has increased, and after conflicts with Mexicans, it gained independence as the Republic of Texas in 1836. It joined the Union in 1845. The state capital is Austin. The largest city is Houston. 676,587 ^km2 . 26,956,958 people (2014).

米国，メキシコ湾岸の州。略称Tex.，TX。西部はなだらかな高原で，東部，南部は低地。メキシコ国境をリオ・グランデ川が流れる。気候は全体に乾燥し，砂漠もある。灌漑(かんがい)が発達，綿花，ペカン，トウモロコシを産する。畜産は牛，羊，豚など。世界有数の産油地で，天然ガスの生産も全米第２位（テキサス油田）。ヘリウム，石炭，岩塩，石膏の産もある。長く大牧場とカウボーイの州として知られてきたが，現在はヒューストンのNASA宇宙基地に象徴されるように工業の発展がめざましく，製油，石油化学，ゴム，食品加工のほか，航空宇宙工業も行われる。経済的に米国の中核をなす州の一つ。インディアン諸部族が住んでいたこの地にスペイン人が侵入したのは17世紀末。1821年にメキシコ領となるが，1803年のルイジアナ購入以来米国人入植者が増加しており，メキシコ人との抗争を経て，1836年テキサス共和国として独立。1845年に連邦加盟。州都はオースティン。最大都市ヒューストン。67万6587km²。2695万6958人（2014）。
