Other examples of "blow-up films" include director Tomu Uchida's experiment with the blow-up method, which he named the "Toei W106 method" as a methodology of expression, in his film Hungry Straits (1964). This film is an attempt to express the inner world of the drama with rough tones, and it fully displays the experimental nature of "small-screen movies," using both hard and soft 16mm film, solarization (an effect in which the gradation of light and shade is smoothed out by the developing process to create a tone resembling a negative, giving the appearance of a moving copperplate print), and the Sabatier method, which is said to have been first used by Man Ray (a method in which light is intentionally introduced during the developing process to expose the negative film, creating an image that looks like waves of light are running through it). *Some of the terminology explanations that refer to "Hungry Straits" are listed below.
