A former town in Saga County in northern Saga Prefecture. The main settlement is Furuyu, which has hot springs. In addition to cultivating highland vegetables and mandarin oranges, the town also operates forestry. The Kawakami River has a beautiful rapids and gorge, and there are many power plants and the Hokuzan Dam, which is used for irrigation of the Saga Plain. In October 2005, it was incorporated into Saga City along with Yamato Town, Morotomi Town, and Mitsuse Village, Kanzaki County. Area: 143.25 km2 . Population: 4,995 (2003).
