A former town in Saga County in northern Saga Prefecture. The main settlement is Furuyu, which has hot springs. In addition to cultivating highland vegetables and mandarin oranges, the town also operates forestry. The Kawakami River has a beautiful rapids and gorge, and there are many power plants and the Hokuzan Dam, which is used for irrigation of the Saga Plain. In October 2005, it was incorporated into Saga City along with Yamato Town, Morotomi Town, and Mitsuse Village, Kanzaki County. Area: 143.25 km2 . Population: 4,995 (2003). 佐賀県北部，佐賀郡の旧町。主集落は温泉のある古湯。高冷地野菜・ミカン栽培を行うほか，林業も営む。川上川は急流で峡谷が美しく，多くの発電所，佐賀平野灌漑(かんがい)用の北山(ほくざん)ダムがある。2005年10月佐賀郡大和町，諸富町，神埼郡三瀬村と佐賀市へ編入。143.25km2。4995人（2003）。
