Fukutomi Zoushi (Fukutomi Zoushi)

Japanese:
Fukutomi Zoushi (Fukutomi Zoushi)
A 15th century picture scroll from the Muromachi period. The story, in two volumes, is about an old man named Hidetake who, being so poor, prayed to the gods at his wife's urging, mastered the amazing art of farting, delighting people and becoming a wealthy man. A neighboring man named Fukutomi, envious of Hidetake's performance, asks Hidetake to teach him the art, but is mocked and fails to fart in front of a nobleman, and is thoroughly beaten up. Each scene is painted in succession, with no legends, and the dialogue is written beside the characters in the painting. Even among Otogi-zoshi, which tend to have humorous and vulgar content, this is a representative example that is particularly excellent in terms of story development and realistic character portrayal.
