Kidney worm - Dioctophyme renale

Japanese: ジンチュウ(腎虫) - ジンチュウ（英語表記）Dioctophyme renale

A nematode of the family Brachiidae. It is so named because it parasitizes the kidneys, especially the renal pelvis, of dogs, foxes, weasels, pigs, horses, cows, and humans, but it can also parasitize the abdominal and thoracic cavities. It is string-like, with females measuring 20cm to 1m in length and males 14cm to 45cm in width. Large individuals are blood red and have a ring-shaped line on the surface of their body. There are also small papillae lined up along the lateral line. There are six papillae around the mouth. The female's genital opening is located 5cm to 7cm from the head end, and she lays beer-barrel-shaped eggs measuring approximately 0.07mm x 0.04mm.

ジンチュウ科の線形動物。イヌ，キツネ，イタチ，ブタ，ウマ，ウシ，人間などの腎臓，とくに腎盂（じんう）に寄生するのでこの名があるが，腹腔や胸腔に寄生することもある。ひも状で，体長は雌が20cm～1m，雄が14～45cmで，体幅は4～12cm。大きな個体は血赤色で，体表に輪状線がある。また側線に沿って小さな乳頭突起が並んでいる。口の周囲に6個の乳頭がある。雌の生殖口は頭端から5～7cmの場所にあって，大きさがほぼ0.07mm×0.04mmのビール樽状の卵を産む。
