...Native to tropical Asia, it is now widely cultivated or naturalized in tropical regions. In Africa, the sweetness of the leaves and roots is sometimes used, but the seeds contain abrin, a toxic albumin, as well as proteins, fat-decomposing enzymes, and alkaloids. In ancient times, the weight of gold was measured by the weight of the seeds in India and Malaysia.
