Niigata Magistrate - Niigata Bugyo

A job title in the Edo Shogunate. One of the Magistrates of Distant Provinces. It was established on June 11, 1843 (Tenpo 14) when Niigata-machi, the territory of the Nagaoka Domain, was handed over to the government. The background to the Niigata handed over was the countermeasures against the smuggling incident (November 1835) and the confiscation order of the Tenpo Reforms. The first Magistrate was Kawamura Nagataka (until 1852), who was the Kanjo Ginmiyaku (financial accountant), and was given a stipend of 1,000 koku, a salary of 1,000 straw bales, and was second to the Sado Magistrate. The office was a successor to the Nagaoka Domain Town Magistrate's Office, and had 130 subordinates, including group leaders and foot soldiers. Its important duties included receiving foreign ships and strengthening coastal defense, and in 1867 (Keio 3) it was given jurisdiction over the town of Nuttari on the opposite shore as well, but this was never carried out after the fall of the shogunate.

江戸幕府の職名。遠国(おんごく)奉行の一つ。1843年（天保14）6月11日長岡藩領新潟町を上知(あげち)して創設された。新潟上知の背景には、抜荷(ぬけに)事件（1835年11月）対策や、天保(てんぽう)の改革の上知令がある。初代奉行は勘定吟味役(かんじょうぎんみやく)川村修就(ながたか)（1852年まで）で、高1000石、役料1000俵、佐渡奉行の次席であった。役所は長岡藩町奉行所を継承改築し、組頭以下足軽(あしがる)まで含め130人の配下がいた。外国船の応接や海防の充実を重要な任務とし、1867年（慶応3）対岸の沼垂(ぬったり)町も管轄することになったが、幕府が倒れ未実施。
