Phenylenediamine

Japanese: フェニレンジアミン
Phenylenediamine

benzenediamine. C 6 H 8 N 2 (108.14). C 6 H 4 (NH 2 ) 2 . Also called diaminobenzene. There are three isomers, o- , m- , and p -phenylenediamine, depending on the relative positions of the two amino groups. o- and p -phenylenediamines are produced by reducing the corresponding nitroanilines, and m -phenylenediamine is produced by reducing m -dinitrobenzene. [ I ] o -Phenylenediamine: Light brown plate crystals. Melting point 102-103°C, boiling point 257°C. K a 3.3×10 -10 (25°C). Soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, etc. Produces various heterocyclic compounds by condensation reaction, and is used to detect 1,2-diketones. LD 50 1070 mg/kg (rat, oral). [ II ] m -Phenylenediamine: White crystals, but oxidizes in air to reddish brown. Melting point 63-64°C, boiling point 287°C. Easily soluble in water and ethanol, poorly soluble in benzene and toluene. Used in ion exchange resins, photographic materials, and more. LD 50 650 mg/kg (rat, oral). [ III ] p -Phenylenediamine: Plate crystals. Melting point 140°C, boiling point 267°C. Oxidizes in air to brown. Soluble in ethanol, chloroform, and ether, slightly soluble in cold water. Dyes fur and hair black. N,N -Dimethyl form shows α-naphthol and indophenol coloring. LD 50 80 mg/kg (rat, oral). Both are widely used as intermediates for azo dyes and sulfide dyes. They are also highly irritating to the skin and may be carcinogenic.
