Least weasel - Iizuna (English spelling)

It is an animal of the Mustelidae family of the Carnivora order of the Mammalia class. It is found in North Africa and Western Europe to Northeastern Asia, and in Japan, it is found in the high mountains of Hokkaido, Tohoku and Chubu regions. It is also called the Little Mustelid. Some scholars classify the North American Least Weasel M. rixosa as the same species. It is the smallest of the Carnivora order, with a body length of 15 to 20 cm, a tail length of 2 to 3 cm, and a weight of about 10 grams. Its summer fur is black-brown on the back and pure white on the underside, and its winter fur is all white. Its main food is mice, and because it is small, it can easily enter mouse holes. It also preys on frogs and snakes, and attacks rabbits, making it an important natural enemy of them. It lives in forests and grasslands where there are many mice, and can be seen near human dwellings. It mates and gives birth from spring to summer, and is said to give birth more than twice a year. It gives birth to 3 to 9 pups at a time. Its fur is of poor quality and small, so it is not used.
