It is a Shinto ritual, and means to worship the deity's departure. In other words, it is a ceremony held when the deity leaves the main shrine. The deity is surrounded by a sacred fence made of sakaki branches, and placed in the center of a procession to be sent to the departure place over a period of one or several days. In contrast, the ceremony in which the deity returns to the main shrine is called the Kankosai.
