Fénelon (English spelling) François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon

Fénelon (English spelling) François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon

French author and archbishop. Born into an old noble family in Périgord. He studied at the Collège de Paris, a Jesuit school, and then became a novice at the seminary. In 1668, he was appointed assistant priest at Saint-Sulpice Church and president of the New Catholic Church, and from then until 1689, he was involved in the education of women and girls who had converted to Catholicism after the repeal of the Edict of Nantes. Around this time, he was introduced to Madame de Maintenon as a disciple of Bossuet, and he became acquainted with the Duchesse de Beauvillier (1660-1733) and others, and published "Discourse on the Education of Women" (1687). In 1689 he was appointed tutor to the Duke of Burgundy, and in 1693 he was elected a member of the Académie Française, but was criticized for his friendship with Madame Guyon (1648-1717), an evangelist of mystical quietism, and wrote "Explanation of the Sayings of the Saints Concerning the Inner Life" (1697) to defend mysticism. The Pope condemned the book, and Fenelon was demoted to Archbishop of Cambrai, where he died alone. It was during these tense years that he wrote his masterpiece, "The Adventures of Telemachaud" (1699).
