Blood Oath Incident

Blood Oath Incident

A series of right-wing assassinations of important figures. On February 9, 1932 (Showa 7), Inoue Junnosuke, the head of the Minseito Party and former Minister of Finance and General Affairs, was shot dead by Onuma Tadashi, and on March 5, Dan Takuma, chairman of Mitsui Gomei, was shot dead by Hishinuma Goro. As a result of the investigation, Inoue Nissho and 14 other people were arrested, and a systematic assassination plot was revealed. As many as 22 important figures in the political and business world were blacklisted. Inoue, the leader of the group, was a Nichiren sect priest who holed himself up in the Rissho Gokokudo temple in Isohama, Ibaraki Prefecture, where he engaged in missionary work, while winning over young people in the area as comrades for national reform. Upon learning of the coup plot of the October Incident in 1931, Inoue decided to join it, leading young comrades from the provinces and student comrades he had gained while in Tokyo. Even after the failure of the October Incident, he did not abandon his policy of reforming the nation through illegal means, and he devised his own terrorist plan and conspired to put it into action in cooperation with a group of young naval officers led by Fujii Hitoshi. However, in January 1932, the Shanghai Incident occurred, and many of his naval comrades, including Fujii, were sent to war, so Inoue's group changed their plan and planned to carry out one-on-one assassinations as the first wave, followed by the naval side in the second wave. In the first trial in November 1934, Inoue, Konuma, and Hishinuma were sentenced to life imprisonment, and the other eleven were given sentences ranging from three to fifteen years in prison, but their sentences were reduced through repeated pardons, and by November 1940, all of them had been released from prison. This trial is also notable in that the defendants attacked the independence of the judiciary in the name of the "national polity," and the court gave in to this.
