...Two Western-style painters, Kawakami Togai and Takahashi Yuichi, were pioneers in this field. Both studied at the Edo shogunate's Kaiseisho (the successor to the Bansho Shirabesho), an institute for the study of Western painting that could be seen as the forerunner of art schools in the Meiji period. The earliest art school to emerge in the early Meiji period was Choka Dokkan, which Togai opened in 1869 (Meiji 2) at his home in Izumibashi, Shitaya, Tokyo, and had students such as Koyama Shotaro and Matsuoka Hisashi.

…At the age of 17, he went to Edo and served Ueno Toei-in, but after meeting the Shijo school painter Onishi Chinen, he decided to become a painter. In 1851 (Kaei 4), he was adopted by the vassal Kawakami Sennosuke, and in 1856 (Ansei 3), he began working at the Bansho Shirabesho (Institute of Bansho), and when the Art Studies Bureau was established, he became its illustrator, and provided guidance to Takahashi Yuichi and other Western-style painting artists active in the early Meiji period. One of the works known from his time at the Art Studies Bureau was the illustrations for Lu Minson's Traveling Journal, translated by Yokoyama Yoshikiyo, which is said to be the beginning of Western-style illustrations. …
